CHARTER FISHING ON LAKE SUPERIOR
The United States Coast Guard requires that anyone transporting for hire (charter fishing) on navigable waters of the U.S. posses a Motor Boat Operators License. These come in varying degrees from a six-pac license to Master Licenses. To actually determine how long your guide has been licensed to take people for hire simply ask them what the issue number is on their Coast Guard License.
The issue number is located on the top right hand corner of all licenses. An issue number of -1- means the license is in its first 1-5 years of experience. A license that carries an issue number of -5- would indicate that the license holder has truly been a charter fishing guide between 20-25 years. The license holder must also be enrolled in a Random Drug Testing Program which is mandated by the Department of Transprotation.
Having said this, the other level of experience would be how long the Captain has been fishing the body of water you plan to hire him for. The Captain is a key factor in your safety and comfort and like cars and trucks they come in all types.
